For 2006 Pfizer Consumer Healthcare is again offering a European Research Grant to promote young scientists researching in the field of hair loss and hair growth. Graduates working on dermatological topics in European Institutions can apply for the grant. 10.000 Euro for a maximum of one year are available for the promotion of that research project.
The grant is specifically to increase the knowledge on hairs Study topics can for example be the following:
* Predictable factors for good response and treatment of alopecia
* Differential diagnosis of hair loss
* Psycho-dermatological effects resulting from alopecia
* Genetic or regulatory factors associated with hair loss
Winner of the European Research Grant 2005 is David Wengraf of the University of Sheffield UK During his doctor thesis the geneticist researched on the role of the autoimmune regulatory gene (AIRE) with alopecia areata.

The application should include contact data, curriculum vitae, synopsis of the project (max. 200 words), a detailed project description (max. 4 A4 pages with background, aim, method, analysis of results, value of study, references, cost calculation), evidence of approval by review board or ethic committee if required as well as a letter of support from the supervisor. The jury deciding on the research grant is composed of four members: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Blume-Peytavi, Berlin, Prof. Dr. Antonella Tosti, Bologna, Dr. Andrew Messenger, Sheffield, and Dr. Pascal Reygagne, Paris. The project is selected on the criteria like the originality, the scientific interest, value of the results, practical clinical interest, feasibility, proposed methodology, cost of the project, timeline and quality of writing.

The laureate will be responsible for presenting the results of his research project on an international or national convention as well as to write a final report, abstract and/ or article for publication. Moreover Pfizer receives a report about the research progression at the end of the grant. The selected project may not receive any financial help of another company.
